Mirabai Chanu won silver in Tokyo Olympics

Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal for India in weightlifting competition in Tokyo and opened India medal count. Mirabai Chanu hails from Manipur; she lifted total weight of 202 kg and won a silver medal. Gold medal was won by Hou Zhihui who is from China; she lifted total weight of 210 kg. Mirabai Chanu became second Indian weightlifter to win a medal for India in weightlifting after Karnam Malleswari. Mirabai Chanu ended India’s twenty years of drought of winning a medal in weighlifting in Olympics. Mirabai Chanu had previously won a gold medal in commonwealth games in 2018 and bronze medal in Asian Games in 2018. Mirabai Chanu was rewarded Padma Shri by government of India in 2018 for her contribution in Indian sports.
