Commonwealth Games 2022: Everything latest about the tournament

Commonwealth Games 2022 are going to be organized in Birmingham, Paris between 28th July and 8th August, 2022. India is all set to enter the tournament with a bang. Amidst of all the preparations going on for this prestigious tournament here are some latest news from different sports and it’s sportsperson which are a part of this event:

Women’s Cricket

As this time cricket has also been included in Commonwealth Games, here is the list of 15 member squad announced lately on July 11 by BCCI:

This will be the first appearance for the women’s cricket team at Commonwealth Games with Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham hosting all matches. Cricket, however, has been played before at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games where South Africa won gold in the men’s 50-over tournament.

Squash

Anahat Singh, all of 14, was on Tuesday added to India’s squash squad for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, beginning July 28.

The Delhi-based 14 year old teenager has been rewarded for her sensational run at the U-15 level. She had also recently won a tournament in Germany along with an the Asian title in the U15 category in June.

Others who will be making their CWG debut in this game include Velavan Senthilkumar and Abhay Singh, who will feature in the men’s doubles event.

Saurav Ghosal, Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal, who have carried the Indian flag in the squash world over for the past 15 years, will also be medal contenders in multiple categories.

Badminton

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) will be conducting a joint practice for the preparation of Commonwealth Games-bound Indian shuttlers from July 18 to 24 in Hyderabad. The entire 10-member Indian badminton squad, including men and women, will practice together under the watchful eyes of the coaches before they leave for Birmingham in the wee hours of July 25 to participate in the biggest multi-sporting event of this year.

In the last Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast in the year 2018, India clinched the maiden mixed team gold medal and finished at the top of table with six medals — two gold, three silver and one bronze medal

Opening ceremony

Olympic champion and star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra could be India’s flag bearer during the opening ceremony of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) may pick the 24-year-old star boy Chopra to lead the country’s contingent during the inauguration of the 2022 Commonwealth Games on July 28.
